First Week of March

I couldn't hear the speaker that well. When I did hear her it was very glitchy. It almost made her sound like she was saying the same word at 100 miles per hour. If I was studying abroad with a Japanese student I think i would try to learn Japanese and teach him/her some English, so we could talk in either language.

The movie got me thinking about how different cultures and countries speak and it almost gets me thinking. Why are there so many different languages? I think a lot of tattoo's people get mean something. Example: Kim you have a tattoo that says 7/11 which was your wedding date. I have friends who have tattoo's of their name on their back, that doesn't make any sense at all. I also have friends that have tattoo's on their body with dates of deaths, this makes a lot of sense just showing their love.

Only reason I think we should have mandatory classes is because we have immigrants coming over and working not knowing what we are saying. I feel this way because when the Mexicans or Spanish people come over and get jobs you need a interpreter to tell what they are saying because they do not speak English. I do not think this would mess wit any cultures because they are learning a new language which can help them in many ways.

I think languages can disappear when they are from an older dialect that aren't taught as much as the main languages are taught today. Example: Catalan is a language in Spain, but since it is not the main language it isn't practiced, so the language is fading away slowly. Only way we could preserve a language is to have it practiced more within the community.

I don't know if we should have an official language for the U.S., but we should have one language that everyone can speak. You see the professional athletes that lived in a different country their whole life until they got drafted to whatever sport they play in the U.S. When they come over they do not speak one bit of English, but they are encouraged by the community and friends to learn English.

Two more weeks

What holiday I do not celebrate is May Day. May Day is May 1st, I do not celebrate this holiday because most people in America do not celebrate this. May Day is mainly a day in different countries where they celebrate politics and how long they have worked at their jobs or unions. Some countries celebrate May Day as the start of Spring or the ending of Winter.

The speaker really got me thinking on the racism towards Native Americans. When the speaker said that that one guy tried to guess his tribe, the guy guessed all the popular tribes before the speaker actually told hmi which tribe he was originally from. When the speaker said that that one other Native American was making fun of him because of his tribe. That shows you that there is more racism within the race than there is out of the community.

What I get from these readings is that we learn a lot from the Native Americans. They have teached us a lot in the past and are still teaching us today. When the colonists came over from Britain or where ever they came from they learned quite a bit from the Native Americans. They taught us how to hunt, build, stalk, trap, etc. What I also get from these readings is that there is a lot of poverty in the indigineous. It makes me feel like we either aren't helping them or they are not wanting any help from us.

The day after Valentine's Day

This blog will be a little difficult after not being able to finish watching class.

I agree with Kim on the name calling of different races. I agree with this because it isn't right to call people slang terms that really hurt them. WhatIi don't agree with is that its bad when a different race calls them that but they can call themselves and people within their race the name. Example: When a white person calls an African American a "nigger" it's wrong, but when another African American calls another a "nigger" thats fine? I am just stating this irritates me because it doesn't seem like it is showing the right reason of the word.

I also want to know when did being Jewish become a race? I am pretty sure being Jewish is a religion and lifestyle. Apparently after World War II, Judaism became a race. This makes no sense whatsoever.

I don't care what people believe in, homosexuals, bisexuals, or race. None of this affects me so it doesn't matter to me what people are or believe in. What bugs me is if your gay just come out of the closet and don't lie. You can really hurt people not being honest with them.

I am not just saying you have to be white to be racist. It feels like every race is fending for themselves. There is white power, black power, brown power, etc. What I am trying to state is that not everyone is treated equal based on race. You can have someone who is completely not racist. They still will have racist thoughts though and they will still feel like they are dominant over other people no matter what race. It is almost like a human instinct for power.

I don't remember the movie. They playback didn't work for me.

First Week In February

This week we had that one lady from South Africa. To be honest I don't really know what to write on here because she talked pretty fast and I couldn't really comprehend anything.

I did understand the culture is way different though. Learning that there is 11 main languages is kind of mind blowing because you don't usually see more than two or three. Then I remember her saying that they couldn't get a job until after college. When today is it is almost recommended to get a job around 14 and 15 years old. The sports aren't that different except that they don't have half the sports we have. They have cricket which we don't have here. As over there they call soccer football when we just call it soccer.

The guy from Canada actually made me realize a lot about Canada. I always thought Canada and U.S. were quite alike, but we are actually quite different. The laws aren't similar at all. Their speed limits or driving are by kilometers and kilometers per hour when ours are by miles or miles per hour. They praise hockey over any other sport. We have our professional sports. Hockey is their main sport they watch or play. Some play baseball or football like the Canadian Football League (CFL). Fun fact: Weston Dressler two time all state running back from Bismarck High School and then went to the University of North Dakota. Weston now plays Canadian football for the Saskatchewan Roughriders. The drinking age is different. To legally drink in the U.S. is 21 and in Canada it is 18 or 19 depends on where you are at. Not to sure about the drug laws. I do not remember what he said about the border though.

I see some of the readings are about women's rights. I respect this fully because women's rights were a great turning point in politics and life itself. Women's rights had a huge deal when it came to voting and even military. Life is making it harder for women though. It's hard to speak in a women's perspective because I am not one. Like the Glass Ceiling says that women get to one spot but are stopped in getting to the top of any place.

Affirmative action is saying that people are being turned down by jobs or mistreated because of their race, gender, or beliefs. This is really messing up our community because when you have people who feel mistreated or treated unfairly because of their culture or race. People have to overcome this and treat people of any race or belief to keep this world going around.

This is what I remember from class on Tuesday. I keep learning something new about different cultures each week.
