The World's Culture

Everyone in the world is different. You will not meet one person who is alike in any kind of way. Everyone has a different culture and different beliefs. There is a lot of discrimination and hate in our world. Why is this? What makes our culture so much better than someone else's culture?

We watched the video in class that was about other people's cultures and it asked what they wanted to be called. To be honest with you this video didn't make any sense to me. The people in the video went around and asked different people of different race what they wanted to be called. I don't see what this video was suppose to teach. I can see how they ask because they are called a lot of different names or racist names.

Our class discussion hit me in the head pretty hard. I knew there were a lot of cultures in our world. I didn't know that people had cultures based on what they do, example: video gamer. I figured a culture was just where you were from or what you believed in, but its not all based on that.

I thought the speaker was a very nice lady to come in and tell us about her country and culture. I learned a lot from her. I learned that Ukraine is quite a bit different than the U.S. In their schools they do not get to pick their classes the school board issues them their classes.Their holidays aren't that much different, their dates are just different. They are very different when it comes to food. They don not have a bunch of fast food like the United States does. I was puzzled by the religion. I thought the Ukraine would have a lot of the same religions, but they practice a lot of Orthodox.

Our culture differs a lot from other cultures.

  1. I think the biggest part of the video that you probably missed was that even though people have different skin color and are from different areas of the world doesn't mean they don't want to be called by their own names. I think sometimes we simply overlook those ideas. It is really easy to overlook some of the small things in life like our own name.

  2. You ask "What makes our culture so much better than someone else's?" Well, if the cultures we adhere to weren't important to us in some way, then culture wouldn't exist at all. To some extent, we all have a sense of "superiority" toward our own beliefs and traditions simply because WE practice and observe them. It's very self-validating and sometimes it is difficult to have the ability to step outside of our beliefs and traditions in order to accept another person. For example, I'm a Christian. More specifically, I'm a Lutheran. To me, Jesus is THE way, THE truth, and THE light. There is no other way to the kingdom of heaven except through him. Some extremists would take that to mean I shouldn't tolerate, accept, or respect say, someone who believes in, say, a Hindu philosophy. So, without getting too in-depth or personal, I believe "culture" has its roots in self-service and in determining the best way to serve the self, we begin to reject everything else.
